An evergreen shrub growing to 2m by 2m at a fast rate. It is in leaf all year, in flower from June to July, and the seeds ripen from October to February. The scented flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by flies and midges. It is noted for attracting wildlife.
The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay and nutritionally poor soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline soil. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires dry or moist soil. The plant can tolerate maritime exposure. It can tolerate atmospheric pollution.
