Alder Varieties - Alnus
Green Alder is a light-demanding, fast-growing shrub that grows well on poorer soils. It does not require moist soil, and is a colonist of screes and shallow stony slopes.
Red Alder is an important forestry tree. Its rapid growth makes it useful in covering disturbed land, such as mine spoils. Alder leaves, shed in autumn, decay readily to form a nitrogen-enriched humus.
Grey Alder is a light-demanding, fast-growing tree that is very tolerant and grows well on poorer soils.it does not require moist soil, and is a colonist of screes and shallow stony slopes.
Italian Alder - Able to fix nitrogen from the air. It thrives on much drier soils, and grows rapidly even under very unfavourable circumstances, which renders it extremely valuable for landscape planting on difficult sites such as mining spoil heaps and heavily compacted urban sites.
