Purple Barberry - Berberis thunbergii Atropurpureum
It is a dense, deciduous, spiny shrub which grows 1 - 2 m high. It has deeply grooved, brown, spiny branches with a single spine. Rich foliage, reddish purple. Throughout spring and summer, increasing in intensity as winter approaches. Whilst it forms a dense deciduous hedge, care should be taken where young children are around as it produces strong thorns which can cause injury.
