They are hardy and suitable for most soils, including poor chalk sites (although they do not do well in waterlogged conditions) and thrive in sun or partial shade. To encourage new growth in older specimens and keep established plants tidy, they can be cut back to a strong bud each year after flowering. Alternatively if left to their own devices they generally develop a more natural and slightly scruffy arching habit. The leaves are tapered and lush green. It is an excellent selection for a mixed flowering border or woodland garden. It is a medium sized shrub, reaching a height of 100 - 140 cm and a spread of 200 - 250 cm in 5 - 8 years.
These are beautiful shrubs that are grown for their reliable display of scented flowers in late spring and early summer. They can be a superb addition to a garden and are striking plants in their own right.
